Josephine Against the Sea by Shakirah Bourne

3.0

This is one of the few middle grade books set in the Caribbean, so I appreciated the setting and the folklore. I also liked the focus on cricket, a sport I know very little about. Josephine was a challenging character. I didn't find her antics funny. I don't think setting up elaborate traps of fish guts that spill all over your dad's date is funny. It was kind of like the Parent Trap meets Junie B Jones, so if you are into that sort of humor, you'll like this. Ahkai, her best friend who’s on the autism spectrum and selectively nonverbal, felt flat and like a caricature. I was also frustrated with the father in the book. This is for younger students.
