Cassandra Clare’s first foray out of the Shadowhunter world did not disappoint. There was a lot of world building in this one, so if that is not your thing you might not love this.

Kel is the Sword Catcher, the doppelgänger meant to take the blade for the Prince. Taken from a young age, Kel is trained in Court politics, to be Prince Conor at events but he also becomes Conor’s friend.

Lin is a healer but is an outsider in this world. When Kel is injured, Lin is drawn into the Royal politics and her life will never be the same again.

I loved Kel and Conor’s relationship and how it evolved over the course of the book. There was a lot going on and a lot of different moving parts to the story so you do need to concentrate on the storyline. I also loved Conor and Lin’s banter and you can tell very early on that there is an attraction underneath all that vitriol.

Then that ending. I saw parts of it coming but things did not pan out exactly as I thought. What a cliffhanger. When is the next book?
