Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa

5.0

This. Book. Is. Required. Reading!!!! Never in my 24 years of existence have I read literature as beautiful as Susan Abulhawa’s words. This book reached into every corner of my being, ripped my heart out piece by piece, and made me whole again. I know I’ve praising a lot of books recently BUT THIS. THIS IS THE BOOK. I wish there were words sufficient enough to capture it. There simply isn’t. Mornings in Jenin captures the beauty of Palestinian culture and the tragic history/present day struggle of those living under brutal and inhumane occupation. Told over several generations, Abulhawa gives such a well-rounded/full-spectrum view of regional and political history, trauma, colonization, familial love, birth, death and all the humanity in between. This book took me over a month to finish because there were chapters I had to come back to after weeping, asking God hard questions, and feeling ready to fully absorb once again. Please read this book. I knew I loved Abulhawa after “Against The Loveless Word”, but “Mornings in Jenin” has solidified Abulhawa as my favorite author.❤️❤️❤️
