The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny
3.0

I really enjoyed Louise Penny's "The Grey Wolf." It is a better-than-most beach read. Penny builds the plot, fills out her characters, and ratchets up tension smoothly, without ever calling attention to herself. It felt very "natural" to read. ("natural" isn't really a good word here - maybe "easily digestible"?) "The Grey Wolf" is never cute, nor does it demand extraordinary attention be paid just to keep characters straight. It is pretty straight forward reading, never trying to be more than the detective novel it is.

Penny's Chief Inspector Armand is a fun and interesting character. I gather he is the subject of most of Penny's fiction work. While I enjoyed "The Grey Wolf" and appreciate Penny's considerable talent I don't know that I would seek out another "Inspector Armand" novel. While enjoyable, "The Grey Wolf" isn't going to be mistaken for the Great Canadian Novel.
