This book seems to have a lot of standing still in a holding pattern.
Grace has a lot of wishy washy back and forth thoughts about Hudson. And Jaxon.
Jaxon has some pretty tough stuff happen to him. Im not really sure what even happened.
Im pretty confused about the particulars on a lot of things. For example, isn’t the vamp in the cave the boys mom? And also, how old is Jackson? If Hudson is at least 200yrs. Also, why did Hudson just graduate before he was killed?
Thankfully, the modern day slang of the moment is toned down after the first book. The pop culture references are still on full blast, unfortunately. IMHO this really dates a book. Also, take a shot for every time you hear ‘blown out pupils’ ugh-gag.
Not to mention, no one in this book ever sleeps, and Grace upchuck reflex is on a hair trigger! Honestly, i have no idea how she is still here, what with the lack of sleep/no food! Its not just her though, they all are scraping the bottom of the barrel.
We get to meet some interesting new creatures.
The story starts to pick up at the end, the giants, the prison. Though, honestly the prison timeline was a bit squandered if you ask me, and a bit anticlimactic. Not sure why Grace has chances to talk to ppl and simply doesn’t when it’s important. Also, completely obvious that forgiving yourself was the answer.
Not sure how Hudson can still fade/get beat up a billion times, even when the cuffs make you lose your magic? Also, how the actual heck does vamp venom kill a vamp? That doesn’t make sense, especially after H said the only thing that can kill one is to remove their fangs(also, huh?) also also, why are they invisible in a mirror, but not a camera? *scratches head!
Also, why does Grace keep getting these new magic powers, and everyone just acts like they knew all along? Like, now she can heal people? Did i just miss that before? Or is this some kind of foreshadowing for her first aid kit?
This book also has soooo many psychology sound bites and throwaway lines. This girl knows how she feeeellllzzz, can spot designer label a mile away, and know artist works at a glance. Not sure why a regular girl from San Diego would know any of that, but Gracie sure does, never fear!
I feel that this story really skips over giant, important, relevant, and interesting chunks of the story. They are really long, but most of it doesn’t really matter. The good stuff-the meat and potatoes, we just skip for the pop-tarts and Dr. Pepper. They read fast and easy. But I’m missing a lot.
Im still really enjoying the whole story. Just have a few gripes.
The audiobook is not my favorite. The ladies Hudson Voice/Accent never stops irritating me(though it isn’t done any favors due to his short replies.) her New Orleans doesn’t do it for me either.
Also, I’m pretty sure the Hudson fellow is actually Australian, not British. Bugs me too. Well, i just looked it up, and it’s unclear, but I’m thinking he is actually American, so i guess that may be the problem.
