The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power by Shoshana Zuboff

5.0

"Who knows? Who Decides? Who decides who decides?" Gosh those words will be in my head forever.

By far, the most convincing book I have ever read regarding social media and Google. This book took me four months to read, and the first half of the book I read via the print version is marked up and highlighted throughout. Overall, this book will likely be one of the most impactful books I've ever read, outside of books about religion/spirituality.

While I do think the world would be better off if everyone could read this, I understand it's a bit extensive for the average reader. If you often read or listen to heavy nonfiction books, you'll do fine, and Zuboff will keep your attention, but if you're not used to it, Jaron Lanier's "Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now" is much, much shorter, more digestible, and focuses on the practicalities for a person's life regarding big tech, rather than all the intricacies that Zuboff gets into. By no means are the two books covering the same exact topic, but in terms of books that may convince you to flee the algorithms, Lanier's is just more palatable.
