For the most part, when it comes to romance books I don’t believe they should be longer than 400 pages. There are, of course, exceptions. But generally, I think romance books are better off being around 320-350 pages. Icebreaker is a perfect example of one that would’ve benefited from being about 50-100 pages shorter.

I enjoyed the overall plot though I did want more figure skating. What we did get I enjoyed. I liked the romance as well. The biggest gripe I had with the plot and romance was the pacing. As the book goes along, both start to drag and nothing new feels like it’s happening. I felt like some scenes toward the middle and end could’ve been cut and nothing of value would’ve been lost. And it would’ve helped the overall pacing.

The biggest strengths of the book are the characters. It’s hard to create a full cast of characters that are enjoyable to read about. But the author succeeds in doing this. I enjoyed the two leads, even if both had moments where I was frustrated with them. The side characters (except for one) are likable and make you excited to read their own love stories. Which is exactly what you want from a book that is setting up a series following different characters.

Overall, Icebreaker is an enjoyable college sports romance. Despite its pacing and some nitpicks to the story, I would recommend reading it if you’re a fan of sports romances. You would also be supporting an indie author and there’s no better feeling than doing that.
