I adored this.  A young FMC that can make young mistakes but also now has to face the consequences.  I love to see a character really think through if a choice they made was smart and have regret for something they've done and be forced to face the consequence.  But also not tip into the realm of "every single thing that is bad that ever happens in this entire world is all my fault *pout and cry*".  Misogyny is raging in this book and as the series goes on, so does the female rage.  And I love a good female rage fantasy romance.   While I wouldn't classify this as a dark romance by any means, there are certainly brutal descriptions of war, battle, and murder.  They aren't dramatized but are honestly portrayed.

The historical viking setting is wonderful.  You can tell the author did extensive research and continues to do so throughout the book.  The slow increase of magic as it goes on.

The spice is lower in book 1, but having now finished book 2 I can safely say it cranks up considerably as the series goes on.

The writing style is easy but gripping, the plot is slower-paced, the political intrigue is excellent but also not overcomplicated, and the setting is excellently presented.

I finished 1 and immediately dove into 3, despite it being nearly three times longer.  And now I'm taking a breather before book 3 because it is 850 pages and I don't want to burn myself out on this series.
