Irish Thoroughbred by Nora Roberts
1.0
The first romance novel I ever read, picking it up from my mom’s coffee table - I had no idea what it was about, but it drew me in. And boy, I was a sucker for Dee, Travis, Paddy, and the horses at Royal Meadows. This was probably my first interaction with “touch her and you die” and I was not upset about it. I’ve read Irish Thoroughbred and its follow-up novels several times, but it’s been a few years since my last read. And as a book published in 1981, the age of it does show this time around. Back when threatening to beat, choke, and murder your wife was a lot more commonplace and accepted, I guess. I did not enjoy (or remember) the handful of times Dee is told she looks like a child by her boss-turned-lover-turned-husband or others. Yikes. Overall, it’s a very easy read, and the scenery is lush as the first time I read it. I can’t help but still cherish it. However, the red flags are a lot redder with the passing of time, sadly.
