An ode to the power of a free press which can hold power to account.

Michael Connelly’s investigative journalist Jack McEvoy is back. This third adventure with the news reporter who first appeared in The Poet is a welcome return for McEvoy.

Jack is now worked for a consumer news website, but when a woman he had a brief fling with is murdered he is pulled in to the discovery and hunt for a serial killer.

Exploring the dark side of the genealogy DNA businesses that seemed to spring up everywhere (the ones that show you where your ancestors came from for people who for some reason care about that) the story ramps up the creep factor about how easily people are persuaded to give away their personal information. It also talks about the rise in true crime podcasts, a nice touch as the book was first published in 2020, a year after the author launched his own true crime podcast Murder Book.

Another Michael Connelly classic.
