This book could be the start of a great series - and from the reviews it certainly seems like a lot of people think so - but for me this first book couldn't figure out what it wanted to be/do long enough for me to become engaged in it. The main character seems to have an extraordinarily short memory and should be on the verge of a breakdown, not willfully going along with everything, none of the bigger pieces of world building were set up well enough and I just couldn't immerse myself into it.
The plot was good though, and it went at a great pace, but because the world building was a struggle, so was the character development. I don't think the switching from the real world to a fantasy world helped this book at all.
