The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

5.0

Updated review w/ very minor spoiler.

Still one of my favorite books! It's a quick re-read despite the length. I'm a sucker for fantasy and military strategy. Also, R.F. Kuang does a masterful job of interweaving historical context in this story. I've seen people discuss the change in tone in the book, but I actually really love the transition in the latter half because that's what war does. It's jarring and takes you out of what you planned for your life and into a more harsh reality. Chapter 21 gets me every time for obvious reasons, and knowing the context behind it makes it even more powerful.

Anyways, glad I read this again and now IT'S TIME FOR THE DRAGON REPUBLIC.
