This is unfortunately my least favorite book in the red rising series so far but even still, this book was really good! I honestly don’t think Pierce Brown is capable of writing a truly bad book lol. I have also heard incredible things about the next books in this series so I am not disheartened in the slightest.
Starting off with the things I did like, I think the new pov’s in this story were a great addition. While I do think that they slowed down the story a bit because we are developing newer characters, it adds a lot more depth to the story. I think that the new povs really help to expand the plot and also help to get out of Darrow’s biased opinion. We get to see more of how his actions affect people and how Darrow is not a perfect character, even though he tries to justify his mistakes. I also think Lydia is very cool and I am excited to see her growth. Another thing I loved was the ending. It was epic and definitely makes me want to pick up the next books asap. Lastly I just loved being back in this world with these characters. It felt like a welcome home after not having read one of these books for a while even though some of the characters actions were questionable.
For the things I didn’t love, I do feel like for a Pierce Brown novel the pacing was a bit slower than usual. However I think it had to be a bit slower because we are setting up for the second half of this series so the author had to introduce a lot of new things. I also didn’t really like Ephram at all in this book other than the fact that he was kind of funny lol. Lysander’s pov was boring at times and Darrow…. Tsk tsk. I think that at times he acted a bit out of character in this book because some of his plans in my opinion were not very rational and I feel like he typically really thinks things through before spontaneously risking the lives of his men. And some of his decisions definitely had me wanting to strangle him a bit.
Anyway this book was very solid and I think it set up very well for the rest of the series.
