The Resurrection by Jodi Ellen Malpas
5.0
'The Resurrection is one of those books you wish you could give more than give, ten, or even fifty stars to. Jodi is simply the master of dark suspense and sizzling steam!' - The British Bibliophile
The Resurrection (Unlawful Men, #3) by Jodi Ellen Malpas is her third book in the series, combining two our favourite sinful loves, Danny Black and James Kelley, along with their women in this seismic story.
Good things come to those who wait, and upon The Resurrection's release day back in March, my paperback came and I dove in. Keen to explore where this next leg of the Unlawful Men would take Danny and James. The other two quickly became firm JEM favourites, so I knew book three would also be as Jodi is an author who doesn't disappoint me or her readers. I only hoped back then, that the separation wouldn't be too hard when awaiting the arrival of book four. Jodi is an author that you simply consume as well as take your time with, and this series just proved just how much one can simply cannot get enough of her.
If you think things were dark both in The Brit (Danny Black & Rose Cassidy) or The Enigma (James Kelly & Beau Hayley) and their respective stories, prepare for a whole new level of sinful, sensual, bleak darkness. With these two men in one book, it would be impossible for things not to have been ten times as so. Danny and James come from the same world but are two completely different men, two men who oddly enough share one goal. Keep their women safe. Among many things. But, their women are just as deadly as they are, in a way. Their work is cut out for them with those two alone, let alone everything being thrown at them in the world they know all too well.
Jodi could write just about any genre and it would be amazing, but she absolutely excels in writing darker than dark romance. James and Danny are perfect examples of that. The Resurrection is a coming together of two alpha males, both fighting for the top spot as it were, while keeping the peace between them as believe it or not, they're on the same side. Or are they? My head was simply spinning around with the amount of twists, turns, surprises and suspense woven into this book, it was hard to work out what was going on because the moment you think you had things--or people--figured out--JEM hit you with another whip to your back and things changed up again. Jodi is the mistress of cracking the whip on her readers, and I love it! One thing I don't usually love, is shedding tears while reading but Jodi makes those tears so worthwhile. Bring tissues if you're planning to read this novel, you're going to need them because feels are brought when you least expect them!
I'm often asked which book would I chose if I could go back and read it again for the first time, and I'm never able to pin it down on just one book. I'd go back and read several books--most of them Jodi's, admittedly--, this one being one of them. There was just so much packed into this book, I'd give anything to experience the journey and rollercoaster all over again for the first time. Danny and James, teamed up with their women all in one place, had the makings to be a powerhouse of a novel and that came true after not even getting a quarter of the way through. By the time the time had come to turn the last page, that assumption had more than turned into a certainty and my jaw was left sitting on the floor at how the latter part of the story was crafted. If I could, I'd give Jodi a standing ovation for a novel so well written, it deserves all the applause.
Jodi made the right decision to put Danny and James together in this book, and I think I speak from all of her readers when I say that. Though I don't think any of us could have imagined just how perfect things would be.
It is an extreme understatement to say that I'm more than looking forward to the fourth instalment in the series, book four. It's been a tough time's wait since March after finishing The Resurrection but as always, Jodi is worth the wait because the goods are always delivered in each of her releases.
As I stated in the beginning of this review, if I could give this book more than the five stars reviews allow, I would. And I have every faith that the fourth book will continue the streak to not just make each book a five star read, but the series a five star series.
Danny and James, until we meet again!
