The Masks We Burn by Lee Jacquot

4.0

I have received an ARC copy of this book.
This was my first time reading a book from Lee Jacquot , and I really enjoyed her writing .
The book follows the story of Amora and William , two college students , getting closer to graduation but nowhere near close to knowing what they want to do with their life .
William is a kind soul , a romantic at heart , he comes from a family where communication was mandatory , his parents were high school sweethearts and their love was something he never thought he will have in his life , he had a dream and that was to be a professional football player. But then one day , everything changed for him and he had to give up his dream and to try and build his life back up.
Amora , honestly , I don't even know what to say about her . She is difficult , strong headed and very cautios with her feelings. Amora came from a family of immigrants , she had a rough childhood , struggling with finances mostly , at some point her dad managed to get a better job and her family got in a better situation.
Now , keep in mind that this is a enemies to lovers story but , I didn't quite understand why Amora was so spiteful or nasty from time to time . I know she had a troubled past , but that didn't quite excuse her behaviour in some scenes. William on the other hand , he wasn't the strong male lead you would expect in this kind of a story , which I quite enjoyed , seeing him evolve was refreshing.
Overall , I think that this is a good story , the characters were complex , you can definitely see a development through the story , I think it's a good read.
The plot , would get a ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ / 5 , I feel like even though this was the 3rd book in a series , it was still a standalone , therefore the story should have been more focused on the couple rather then the wedding of their friends.
The spice in this book would get a
