Lullaby
by Chuck Palahniuk
Well that was weird. Fun but disjointed and sort of confusing. Had a nice symmetry though, things all felt of a piece. That might sound contradictory to my disjointed complaint, but for that I mean more in the actual telling of the story. It jumped around and felt sort of jerky. The symmetry was more thematic. Things would fold back over each other and fit together. The main character is a reporter which gave a nice framework for the level of details you would get about people or things, but he would also lay them out so unceremoniously that it takes some of the shine off. He would literally say "The details about [_____] are...". I think this added to the staccato feeling. I did, however, like the way he described colors. It takes a little effort to sympathize with the characters because there is some moral ambiguity around the whole thing. Well really it's not that ambiguous, it's generally pretty reproachable but there are good intentions and lack on control mixed in there.
