Little Witches: Magic in Concord by Leigh Dragoon

4.0

If you haven’t been paying attention, I am a die hard Little Women fan. I love Little Women in every form and interpretation, and so I’ve been so excited by the recent crop of YA graphic novel adaptions of it!

In Little Witches, the March sisters are witches in Concord, and their new neighbors the Laurences at witch-finders. Soon, things and people start disappearing from Concord, and it seems like the result of a spell by a spy or a Confederate mate. It’s up to the March sisters and Laurie to figure it out with the adults away!

I’ve never considered Little Women with magic before reading this, and honestly it is a Galaxy Brain concept. I love it so much. I also liked how it kept the time era but just added magic. I almost wish this was a longer graphic novel (or perhaps a series?!?) because I’d be so interested to see how the March sisters’ lives are changed or impacted by having magic. Also, Mr. Laurence got an entirely new backstory in this version. He’s a witch-finder and former slave who escaped to freedom and wrote a Frederick Douglas esque book about it, bringing him fame and riches. One fault of Little Women is that it never deals with race in any meaningful way (other than supporting abolition) so I thought this was an interesting addition to the story.

In certain places, I liked Little Witches more in concept than execution. It lost me a little when it veered so far from the Little Women story I know and love. I was particularly confused by the villain’s motives and the completely abrupt ending.

Still, l overall enjoyed being in the world of Little Witches and would eagerly read more of their adventures! Recommended for any Little Women fans!
