The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl
by Issa Rae
Okay, this might be closer to 4 stars, but I happily bumped it to 5 stars since I just love Issa Rae so much. I picked this book up immediately after finishing Yvonne Orji’s book, since I’m clearly on an Insecure kick.
I loved how this book blended Issa’s trademark humor with relatable stories of growing up with immigrant parents - I was shocked with how similar some of her memories reflected my own, at times. I also loved all her references to 90’s hip hop classics, like Mase, Nelly, Puff Daddy, Biggie, Missy Elliott and on and on - so nostalgic, whether or not that was intentional.
I’ve been a fan of Issa Rae since 2011, when a friend introduced me to her Awkward Black Girl web series, which helped launch her career. I’m just so delighted with her success today - her comedy is sharp, smart and relevant, and she’s worked so hard to make her magic happen. I’m actually inclined to now go back and re-watch ABG, for old times’ sake!
Why’d I pick this read? From Sonali’s haul and general Issa Rae fandom
