Don't You Forget About Me
by Mhairi McFarlane
I listened to this as an audiobook on Audible and thoroughly enjoyed it - what a breath of fresh air!
CW: sexual assault; emotional abusethere's a scene towards the end of the book in which a character describes an event during which they were sexually assaulted
We follow our leading lady, Georgina, who, at 30, still seems to be finding herself. The book opens with a flashback to 12 years prior, when she's in her sixth form (English equivalent for high school), and is partnered up for an assignment with a new student from Ireland, Lucas. The two become inseparable and share a head-over-heals in love romance, which they keep private. Fast forward 12 years and Georgina is working a less-than-pleasing job as a waitress at a nasty mock-Italian restaurant, from which she ends up fired, only to go to her boyfriend's apartment and catch him cheating on her. This leads to a roll out of hilarious, delightful, heart-warming and heart-wrenching events.
I really enjoyed Georgina's character. She's witty, funny, not afraid to stand up for herself or others but also very loving and caring - an all around strong woman. I found her super relatable and loved that she didn't have it all together. There's an ideology that by a certain age in life you should have accomplished (or should be accomplishing ) certain things; Georgina's character breaks that ideology even though she's surrounded by it throughout the book and I liked that this book delivered the message that you don't need to follow those ideologies to be successful or happy in life.
This was the first book I read by Mhiari McFarlane and I highly doubt it'll be the last!
