So many elements in this memoir made me angry. I understood her desire for family, but her immediate family is so dysfunctional that cutting ties would have made her life much easier. The author seemed like a glutton for punishment in the senior and third parts of the book . Then again, she grew up isolated from much of her extended family. Therefore, losing contact with her immediate family is a greater loss. Overall, this was not my favorite read, but I understand why this is a crowd favorite.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Physical abuse, Toxic relationship, Xenophobia, Religious bigotry, and Medical trauma
Moderate: Mental illness, Sexism, Blood, and Car accident
Minor: Animal death, Cancer, Racial slurs, Racism, and Antisemitism
