Finders Keepers
by Stephen King
An absolutely fantastic page turner. 4.5 stars. I enjoyed the first book, but this one really knocked it out of the park. King is just the greatest storyteller. He grabs you by the arm and won't let go.
Hodges, Holly and Jerome are almost incidental in this book until the climax. They don't even appear until more than 100 pages in. No, this is a story about a boy, a man, and a trunk full of stories. I loved the premise, I loved switching between Pete and Morris and seeing how their lives both paralleled and diverged. Morris' insanity was very well rendered. I loved all the literary references and how King writes about the ways our favorite books can change, as he says, not just our lives but our hearts.
It was as thoughtful as it was exciting, very well-paced with excellently well-drawn characters. I did dislike the tense switching. Pete and Morris's sections were in third person past tense, which is my favorite style. Hodges' sections are in present tense, like the first book, which I don't like as much and find kind of distracting. Especially when it kept switching back and forth and I had to reorient each time.
Damn fine yarn, though!
