Trespasses
by Louise Kennedy
This book does "period piece" very well. I loved the descriptions, the food, the slang - even though I didn't understand half of it, haha. The author has a delightful knack for building out characters, too: Cushla is immensely warm and consistently acts from her heart more than her brain, very true to her age (24). I loved her relationship with Gerry and with Davy. In contrast, the story is not an easy one to read in that it is relentlessly sad and hopeless - but given the setting I think you're prepared for that going in. In some sections the setup is so threadbare that I wasn't aware we had transitioned to a new setting/location, and the erratic use of quotation marks made further confusing at times, but I am glad I stuck with this one.
