A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
4.0
“I believe children have the resilience to outlive their sufferings, if given a chance.”
A Long Way Gone is a heart wrenching story that makes you wish it wasn’t true.
A Long Way Gone follows the life of Ishmael Beah and the tragic events that forced him into the life of a boy soldier. Taking place in Sierra Leone, Africa, we see the blood thirst of the Rebel soldiers and how it influenced so much of the country to leave its people in a constant state of fear. Ishmael and his friends then being forced to take action against the Rebel forces.
Ishmael Beah did an incredible job at telling his story. He put the reader in his shoes to show the terror that he experienced. Beah told the story in such a way that makes you question who the “Rebels” actually were. When survival takes precedent, who is in the wrong?
