Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

3.5/5

“It is my right to be unsociable and it is my right to be unpleasant to be around. Do you ever listen to yourself? This is crazy, that is crazy, everything is crazy to you. By whose measure? Well, it is my right to be crazy... I have no shame. I have felt many things in my life, but shame is not among them.”

This is a super dark feminist collection of short stories. Machado’s beautiful writing really added such a surreal edge. All of the stories were poetic in their own ways, following queer and feminist themes throughout strange imagery. My favorite story was “Inventory.”

Overall: I really enjoyed the writing style of this book, but some of the stories felt flat and were hard to get through. I do recommend it for anyone who would be into an adult queer version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
