How Should a Person Be?
by Sheila Heti
i am sooo torn on this book, omg. it gives me a similar feeling to watching HBO Girls, except unlike Girls, i didn’t find this funny? was it supposed to be? i liked the discussions about art, what’s the purpose of being an artist, what’s the point of friendship, of being a person… the dialogue felt sort of annoying but it’s about artists and writing plays so that was unavoidable. some of the ideas were really thoughtful, but then i thought it was too meandering, then i thought wait is this kind of genius? but then it would lose me a little in the talk of religion and overt sexuality. it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that sections of this were written like a play lol. i don’t know what to think!! but it’s good to be challenged, to be confused by a piece. who knows, maybe i’d feel differently about it if i was an artist
