Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman
4.0

I listened to this book as an audiobook.

The feel of this story is very similar to A Man Called Ove...there is a woman in her 60s that is slightly socially awkward that has a major life change where she finds herself completely thrown out of her normal routine. And routines and lists seem like Life to Britt-Marie. Also, by way of fate, she is placed into the lives of the people in a small town called Borg who become entangled in her life even as she thinks she is remaining on the outskirts.

This book is very sweet and I always love a good story where there is real growth in the characters (and Britt-Marie’s growth is my favorite) and whole towns change because of one person or one seemingly small event.

What I also loved about this book is that while there were a few romantic (using that word extremely loosely as they are more platonic than romantic but still...) storylines but in the end, they didn’t define Britt-Marie and they didn’t take over the true storyline of self actualization (seems like high falutin’ phrase to use but I feel like it really fits). There are a few individuals that really find who they are and what they are made of...but so does the whole town!

There is a tragic occurrence that is a defining moment for many of the characters and it is sad but is handled in a beautiful way.

This is the kind of book that keeps you rooting for positive change (no matter how small) and restores your hope in people! It will definitely leave you feeling good!

One side note, there is a significant amount of cursing (f-word in particular) but it is only a few characters and i didn’t feel like it distracted from the story at all.
