How to Read Poetry Like a Professor: A Quippy and Sonorous Guide to Verse by Thomas C. Foster

2.5

I felt like this book talked about the mechanics of poetry without adequately demonstrating how to move from mechanics to meaning. I learned a few things. There were a few inspirational lines. It ended beautifully. In the end, however, the book fell flat. The author’s allusions to certain poems, songs, and elements pop culture didn’t help. To me, they seemed more like unfair assumptions to make of readers, especially those new to poetry or who grew up in a culture or generation different from his own.
