Ordeal by Linda Lovelace, Mike McGrady

3.0

this is one of the sadder things ive read all year. at every turn, linda lovelace was failed either by an uncaring and misogynist society, coworkers, friends, and even her own parents. lovelace was lauded as a sex icon during the same time her abusive husband was pimping her out and violating her in unimaginable ways.

there is such an overwhelming and unavoidable current of christianity flowing through this book, which is understandable given lovelace's horrifying experiences. however, as much as i empathize with her, it never got any less frustrating to see her demonize all forms of sexuality. she tends to correlate abuse with ALL sexuality, not just kink, because anything outside of heterosexual missionary is freak shit. i was surprised just how homophobic this book is too.

since this was a pretty fast read, id still recommend it, but it gets pretty intense at some points. the constant moralizing is entirely understandable but its still pretty tedious, particularly when it breaks the flow of the narrative. you should definitely look up a list of trigger warning. for some reason, knowing all of this this actually happened to someone fucks me up a lot more than whatever messed up fiction i happen to be reading so tread lightly.
