Pitch Perfect by Sierra Dean

This book was fun. It has been way too long since I was able to read a baseball novel, and this hit the spot for me. The author is someone I consider a Twitter friend, although I did not until recently know she WAS an author, and of baseball books. I was thrilled to learn it, and while I have a few editorial quibbles with the story (see my Kindle notes), overall I really did enjoy this book.

It was so nice reading a baseball romance written by a woman who knows the sport. There were some hokey moments--but it's romance, so what do you expect? Romance isn't typically my genre, but I thought I would enjoy it more if it was wrapped in baseball, and I was right. Plus, I trusted the intelligence of the author to make the romance part readable and not cringeworthy, and the chemistry between the two main characters was both undeniable and riveting.

Plus, consent was ALL OVER this story. Every time the woman expressed hesitation, the man immediately backed off and didn't make her feel bad about it. His yearning and desire were keenly felt without the accompanying obligation to "satisfy" him. I love love LOVE that approach, and it is what we need to see more of in our media depictions of romance: responsible men capable of controlling themselves and who don't feel like their throbbing erections give them automatic permission to do whatever they want with the object of their desire. Men who don't see the objects of their desire AS objects to begin with. Injecting personhood and consent and equality into romance stories isn't actually that hard to do, as Sierra Dean expertly showed us here, and it increased the sexual tension between them, as well as the desire in me to see them end up together after all. Consent is a win-win for everyone all the time!

I enjoyed this, and will be continuing in the series.
