Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

3.0

I was SO excited as I finally started this book, especially upon the immediate references from my country of birth- including CDMX, Pedro Infante, las momias de Guanajuato, etc… I had very high hopes as I continued the novel & thought it would go into eugenics/colonialism in Mexico, but I was let down and unfortunately a bit bored at times. The commentary on being a woman in the 50s was a little too on the nose at times (and as much as I wanted to connect to Noemi, she was so one dimensional, Catalina too). Forced myself to keep listening to the audiobook and the last bit of the novel finally picked up and I was !!!!??????!!!! (…….and MUSHROOMS??????)
