The Last Fallen Moon by Graci Kim

Star Rating: 4 stars

Note: This is the 2nd book in the Gifted Clans series so this will not be an in-depth review.

To read all the books from the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, I recently picked up The Last Fallen Moon, book 2 in the Gifted Clans series. This book tells the story of Riley Oh as she struggles to find her place in a world that is rapidly changing all while going through some pivotal changes of her own.

The best thing about this book is how it introduces Korean culture to young readers, particularly their values, the importance they contribute to family, and their desire for perfectionism to the point that they can be a determinant to their own health, safety, and well-being. In a world where young readers will be exposed to all different kinds of diversity, learning about new cultures, especially ones different to their own, is vitally important as it can help them be more understanding and insightful adults.

If you know me as a person, then you know that I have a love for Asian culture, and although I am much more well versed on Chinese and Thai culture, I am a fan of K-pop so all the references to BTS and BlackPink were very exciting and funny to me. Also, I appreciate the pop culture reference (Greece) and the reference to the famous K-drama actor, even though I don’t watch K-dramas (usually only Chinese and Thai ones). There is a scene in this book that made me laugh so hard that my mom asked if I was okay (I have a weird sense of humor due to my autism, so I don’t laugh like that often and I think she was a little freaked out.)

The main character of this book, Riley, is at a very pivotal point in her development, and her normal struggles of growing up are further compounded by the fact that she is dealing with the fact that she is adopted, her sister is sick with a mysterious illness, and because of events in the 1st book, her entire family has forgotten her. I really liked how over the course of this book Riley is forced to come to terms with these issues and discover her place and maybe, her destiny.

All in all, if you are looking for a fun adventure story to use to introduce yourself or young readers to a new experience or culture, then this is a great option, although it didn’t have the thematic punch of some of the other Rick Riordan Presents books I’ve read. It was a fun read, though, and a nice break from some of the heavier books that I’ve been reading. 4 stars and a solid read!!!!!!!
