A History of Wild Places
by Shea Ernshaw
This is a book for patient people I think! I’m not a patient person and there were several times where I considered permanently putting the book down. I’m really glad I pushed through.
It took me forever to get through because it felt so slow in the beginning which, after finishing, makes a lot of sense and it’s a feature I think is nice. The pace of the story matches the pace of the plot. The story starts slow, and in the plot, there is nothing to worry about. Then, as the characters begin to question their reality, the pace of the story picks up and begins to pique your interest. Further along, and the characters become desperate, and you can feel their desperation in the pace of the story. The more the characters feel, the faster the story and I think that was fun!
As for the plot, it unfurls in a way that we discover all of the secrets along with the characters. The foreshadowing and the secrecy is so well done that the twist was something that genuinely caught me off guard, and only after learning the truth was I able to think of things said in the beginning and understand their hidden meanings. Even at the very end, there were unexpected twists, but even so, I still enjoyed the end of this book.
I think if I didn’t have so much trouble getting through the first half, this would be a favourite of mine!
