A Magic Dark and Bright by Jenny Adams Perinovic
4.0

This is my first Net Galley Advanced Readers Copy!

I am so happy that my first review gets to be about a book I really enjoyed. This is the first book by Perinovic and the first in a series. This book will be available April 28th.

A quick synopsis:

Amelia is still grieving over the lost of her brother Mark, when Charlie MacAllister moves in next door. Along with his new arrival, the woman in white reappears. She is the ghost that Amelia has been able to see since childhood. When Amelia and her friends discover that the woman in white in stuck between worlds, they decide to help her. But when girls start dying in this small town, all eyes turn to Charlie, the new kid and the one who supposedly comes from a long line of witches.
I greatly enjoyed this read. It was so much more than what I expected. I am really bad at reading synopsis and blurbs, so I thought this book was going to be all about magic from the get go. At the beginning the book turned out to be more of a suspense and mystery. The supernatural element was there but mostly in the form of the Woman in White. As the story progressed so did the supernatural aspect, and we are slowly introduced to the magic.

The magic was described by using words, rituals, and movement. There are no wands, but there are grimories. It made me think of old school witches and wizards, rather than Harry Potter. I don’t know why but I feel like wandless magic feels more authentic and realistic. I know that sounds weird …

The book also has two different timelines. Perinovic did a great job of using dreams to tell the historical side of this story. The dreams tell the story of a young woman name Marin, who is born with magical abilities.

The Characters

Amelia is so well written. She was wondering through life, trying to come to terms with her brother death. She is clumsy, but not overly so like most young adult books have us believing all girls are. Her new friendship with Charlie has her starting to feel like a normal teenager again, one who is starting to fall in love.

Charlie MacAllister moves in with his grandma, the one who the whole town believes to be a witch. He is a kind of a hipster, and the first male lead since Harry Potter that wears glasses. He believes Amelia when she says she can see spirits. When the Woman in White returns, they try to discover her identity. His family are supposedly witches.

I really liked these two. We see their friendship grow into a romance, but it isn’t rushed or love at first sight. Their feelings develop gradually over time, it is through their friendship that we see a lot of Amelia’s backstory come out.

This book also had a great supporting cast, I felt that each character was essential. The villains were so dastardly. I want to go on and on about hem but I don’t want to spoil anything. I am usually really good at predicting certain events, and with this book I was only right 60% of the time.

I give this book a B+. I thought it was a great start to a series, it had mystery, magic and suspense. I definitely left me wanting more, I can’t wait until the next book. The reason why I am giving it a B is because I want to know the answers to my handful of questions.
