Suspending my suspension of disbelief

I expected a lot out of this book based on the teaser provided on Amazon, but the more I went on reading, the more I became disappointed. Not going to lie, the first half was good. But all the dominoes started falling when Julian proved how much of a bully he was, is and always will be. He essentially destroyed Autumn but was upset at her for becoming pregnant and hiding his child from him? And like a moth being drawn to a flame, Autumn fell for him time and time again. It’s like she was a glutton for punishment.

I love assholes. My boyfriend is one, but if he treated me the way Julian treated Autumn, he would be single and he would have been very, very sorry. Julian wasn’t just an asshole, he was an absolute douche canoe and he would’ve deserved everything coming his way if only Autumn wasn’t weak kneed for Mr. “I’m going to force myself on you and you’re going to like it.” There is such a thing as consenting non-consent, but that wasn’t it and it certainly wasn’t hot either.

I was further pulled out of my suspension of disbelief when Capri opened her mouth. Yes, she is a precocious little child, but a lot of times she spoke as if there was a 20 year old in her body. Fiction or not, it just didn’t feel realistic and that’s what really threw me off. The immersion of the story was broken every single time.

I don’t usually review books, but I was so upset that I felt compelled to. Kudos to those who enjoyed it, but it just wouldn’t hack it for me.
