The Midnight Palace by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

4.0

On a stormy night in 1912, a soldier pursued through the streets of Calcutta by a relentless evil deposits orphaned twins on their grandmother's doorstep. Knowing she can't provide them the protection they need, the grandmother takes the boy to the local orphanage. Ben grows up with a group of seven friends who create a secret organization, the Chowbar Society, that calls on members to promise to teach each other what they know about the world (so they can survive once they leave the orphanage) and take care of one another. Little do they know what they have gotten themselves into when the evil returns to take Ben.

Very mysterious and creepy. The love the seven friends have for each other touched me.

Grades 8-10.
