The Realms of the Gods
by Tamora Pierce
I have to admit, part of the reason I re-read this series is because I remember the romance in this final book so vividly. Pierce did a really masterful job with Daine and Numair's realization of their love for one another, in a way that was so exciting and sensual but not explicit or inappropriate.
I remember reading this at a much younger age, and thinking it was so unexpected because Numair was like, 30, and Daine is 16. That seemed like such a weird concept to me, but again Pierce wrote their romance in such a way that it wasn't gross or non-mutual. It fits so well with Daine's strong personality and maturity, and I remember being completely drawn into their blossoming love and feelings for one another.
It was a satisfying conclusion, although I think the giant battle scenes were a bit skimmed-over (in favor of focusing on the pieces that were important to the plotline, and not getting bogged down in the magnitude of the war/final battle scenes). The plot for this character got so huge, with the Gods/threat to the universe, it might have taken away from Daine's story a bit.
I love this series, and I think every young girl should read these books (and boys, too!). These stories are so empowering, exciting, and fun.
