The Diary of a Young Girl
by Anne Frank
dark
emotional
funny
hopeful
informative
inspiring
reflective
sad
tense
medium-paced
Themes or characters that resonated with me: Anne's theme of hope or thankfulness reminded me of Robinson Crusoe. Basically keeping optimistic, and looking on the bright side despite horrific circumstances. Anne is very relatable as a young person going through the same things young people go through across all time, geographies and circumstances. The final entry of the diary, when Anne relates her thoughts on her outer self vs. her inner self, was very relatable. We all have the different parts of us, and we just want to be understood.
Emotions, thoughts, or memories it brought up in me:
Opinion about the author or writing style: Anne is a very eloquent writer. Maybe kids were just that much smarter back in the day, or maybe there was some polishing done in editing. She is very good at putting her thoughts into writing it seems.
Favorite Passage:
"When I get up in the morning, another very disagreeable moment, I leap out of bed, think to myself, "You'll be slipping back under the covers soon," walk to the window, take down the blackout screen, sniff at the crack until I feel a bit of fresh air, and I'm awake. I strip the bed as fast as I can so I won't be tempted to get back in. Do you know what Mother calls this sort of thing? The art of living. Isn't that a funny expression?"
__________
"I'd want to have the feeling that he understood me through and through, even if I didn't say much. For this reason it would have to be someone I felt was intellectually superior to me, and that isn't the case with Peter. But I can imagine your feeling close to him."
What a sick burn, and it was meant (and taken) in a nice way, but this was hilarious to me... "he's not good enough for me, but he sounds perfect for you" Lmao.
__________
"So the radio is switched on every morning at eight (if not earlier) and is listened to every hour until nine, ten or even eleven at night. This is the best evidence yet that adults have infinite patience, but also that their brains have turned to mush (some of them, I mean, since I wouldn't want to insult anyone)."
My ratings-
Writing Style: 90
Relatability: 100
Originality: 90
Personal impact: 90
