This book has been circulating for a minute on my timeline. When I saw it last year on my girl @borderlineescapist page and how much she loved it-- I wanted to give it a read. When you see a beautiful comic cover with 4 melanated queens, I had to drop some coins😂.
Wash Day Diaries was so New York, specifically so Bronx! From the lingo of
"Baconeggandcheeseonaroll" ( side note: this is how it's said, as one word no pause 🤣).
The 4 Besties: Kimana, Devana, Cookie, and Kamesha are best friends. Each woman has a scene of them doing their hair or getting done by a style. From the shampoo, creams, detangling - it was so relatable. It was beautiful to witness all the different hair textures and styles showcased.
Each character had a short story of their day. I appreciate the author and illustrator as they conveyed a variety of emotions and topics such as depression, family forgiveness, friendships, and momenta at Black Hair Salon. Even though short, each character's story was genuine.
My favorite chapters were the " Group Chat" chapter when Kamesha was juggling two dudes and almost got caught😆😆😆 & " Ride or Die" when Kimana's ex-boyfriend was being hella stalker-ish and girls ready molly whop him.
Also, the artwork by Robyn Smith was amazing. The color scheme chosen represented spring to me.
(Robyn is the illustrator of Nubia Comic.)
🚇 Did I mention that the homage to the Bronx gave me all the feels😍.
💗Overall, I enjoyed this Wash Day Diaries -- there is nothing like seeing Black & Latinx women living their best life and with their hair done!
