Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space by Amanda Leduc

4.0

This was a fantastic and thought provoking glimpse into the world of fairy tales through a disability lens. Written by a disabled author who was able to share her own instances of injustice and how the happily ever after train of thought can be so damaging, especially to disabled children.
I really appreciated this book as an entry point to this style of conversation. Leduc provides an in depth review of so many tropes found throughout many Western fairy tales. And the bibliography to support it.
As someone who deals with (for now) manageable chronic pain it was relieving and also a little disheartening to relate to some instances that were mentioned in the latter portion of this book. But also inspiring to see a call to action to make society and the very structures around us conform to being accessible. To make the world adapt rather than try and attempt to fit a mold that is quite literally impossible to make work.
I will be passing along my copy to friends who I think will be able to contribute to an insightful dialogue about the arguments brought up in this book.
