challenging dark informative sad tense medium-paced

A very strong piece of investigative storytelling by Farrow. Most of the text reads as more of a thriller than a piece of nonfiction, oftentimes leaving you breathless in anger, sadness, or both. The first 300 pages or so are pretty much perfect, but once you reach the point where the Weinstein story gets published, the book loses a lot of its focus and cohesion as it starts bouncing around between Trump and Lauer and spy organizations. I understood what Farrow was trying to accomplish in presenting this sort of grand narrative around systems of abuse and how stories get silenced, I just don’t think it was executed as well as his recollection of his Weinstein reporting.

This is a tough read, though. Even as a man, some of the stories of abuse presented by Lauer and Weinstein’s victims definitely made my stomach turn, so proceed with caution.
