Short novella, but not any worse than Becky Chamber's usual masterful writing. Actually the length might've distilled what I like about her writing down to something a bit purer than her full length novels; this story really exemplified that mix of plausible optimistic sci-fi and positive outlook on humanity's future, that Chambers is just so good at. If nerdy speculative humanistic scifi is your thing, this is absolutely worth the short amount of time it'll take to read.
