I enjoyed this latest installment of the Vera series, but it took me awhile to get into it. Though the first murder occurs at the beginning, the first third felt slow, and I found myself not really caring what happened to the victim, and suspects. I also struggle sometimes with how unkind Cleeves is her portrayal of Vera, and the constant discussion of her physical attributes. The mystery unravels little by little with plenty of twists and turns once it finally gets moving. Killing off Holly (DC Clarke) at the end felt somewhat pointless to me, and I can’t see what we gained from doing it. All in all a decent read, but not one I’ll come back to a second time.
