The Deep by Nick Cutter

3.0

Woof. Let me start by saying I read 97% of this book today, I just wanted to close it off so I could start fresh on whatever note I wanted once the new year kicked off.

I came into this hoping for something as good or better as the ‘troop’ unfortunately I don’t think it was. And there’s a few talking points I’ll bring up, because I truly believe that was a step down.

My biggest problem is the ‘dreaming’. I’ve never been a huge fan of stories that constantly rely on dreams to go crazy with gore or horror. And I really was disappointed when something nasty would happen and then at the start of the next chapter we’d get hit with, “And then Luke woke up”. Also it caused so much confusion as to what the actual situation was and who was where.

The body horror was definitely more detailed in this novel compared to the ‘Troop’ but honestly I think the body horror here is just lazy. It just feels like Nick Cutter had a bunch of different ideas and instead of making a shorty story collection he threw his best idea in as the base and forced all the others in along the way.

I’m giving 3 starts because I still liked it. I’m sure a person could tell. But I don’t rate very harshly, that’s because I often don’t even take a chance on books that I think I won’t like. And this wasn’t a total disappointment, there were tons of ideas and grossness that I loved. There just wasn’t enough to make a great story. I just picked up ‘Little Heaven’ so I may crack that one open next. Anyway happy new year and I’ll see you in 2024 with a new book!
