A cozy read.

I did not remember a lot from the first book, and if you’re like me, don’t worry. Klune reintroduces you to the world and characters effortlessly. The characters, especially the kids, are as charming as I remember. The larger story about the government’s effort to control and villainize magical beings feels very real in today’s US political climate.

The reason this book doesn’t get 5 stars is because the resolution to the conflict felt rushed.
I appreciated that Zoe represented the plight of Native folks in terms of stolen land and being overtaken by colonialism. However, I felt that her character could have been built more gradually. It felt less emotionally impactful because it revealed itself so quickly.

Overall, I’m glad Klune wrote this sequel and if you liked the first book, you’ll like this one too.
