I wanted to love this more than I did. The angst and slow burn tension between Oraya and Raihn was there, and when the action finally kicked in, it was solid. But the pacing… oof. Over 350 pages of circling, mistrust, and “just say you love each other, cowards” before any real plot movement. Then in the last 100 pages, we get get a hole load of surprises and a finale that left me feeling more tired than feral.
It wasn’t bad — I enjoyed parts of it — but at 587 pages, it felt bigger than it needed to be. I’ll give it 3 stars for Raihn’s chaos and the occasional swoon, but Oraya deserved a better arc than the one she got.
