The Two Lives of Lydia Bird
by Josie Silver
The concept of this book sounded so fascinating to me but unfortunately it just fell a little flat. I had a hard time missing Freddy because, when he was initially introduced, he came across as a jerk and my gut reaction was, “Dump him, Lydia.” Even throughout the Asleep chapters when his character became a little more likable, I still couldn’t really connect with him. In the end, when he abandoned his new wife on their honeymoon to go work, I went right back to hating him. Who does that??? I was also confused about the introduction of Christopher because the author deserted him pretty quickly. It seemed pointless to bring him in as a love interest for Lydia and then he disappears a few minutes later. All that said, I liked a different book by this author (Winter in New York) enough to give her another try after this even though this book wasn’t my jam.
