The Prophecy of Shadows by Michelle Madow

5.0

I enjoyed this book about as much as I thought I would when I first saw it. (It reminds me of the Existence books I'm writing, except the main characters are teenage witches.) "We're not gods. But we have 'diluted god blood' in us." I loved that in Chapter 4.

The Harry Potter reference in Chapter 2 (about the owl dropping a letter) made me laugh.

"Because people are supposed to train for battle before entering it." That line in chapter 39 is from of my favorite part of the book.

It's difficult to be the first book in a series like this, having to establish who the characters are and why it matters, trying to sneak in backstory without overwhelming readers, hinting at mythology without being history class notes. The author did a pretty good job of managing all that here.

This is very fun YA urban fantasy. I look forward to reading more of the series.
