A Song Only I Can Hear by Barry Jonsberg

4.0

The novel a song only I can hear is a story that follows the main character Robert Fitzgerald who is incredibly shy and suffers from panic attacks. He suddenly received anonymous challenges that helped him to find courage in himself.

Barry Jonsberg is a great author and has again delighted me with another light hearted and beautiful read that shows vital character developments in unexpected ways and helped me to see into the mind of a 13 year old boy.

I liked this plot. It is not a completely plot driven novel, not in any means, however it is more vivid and important, unlike in other books I have read this year.
Rob's interaction with other characters also unleash further aspects of his personality, this include his interesting relationship with his grandfather, his best friends and the new girl wo he tries to impress.

The stories main focus is wanting this particular girl to like him and to crawl out of his sheath of worry and fear. I found it a very fun and adorable read, however aspects of the book made me cry and laugh and smile. At the end of the book there is the twist, and the reason for Rob's insecurities at the start, which makes sense when you piece the parts together. That was another thing I enjoyed. The use of sneaky foreshadowing poised in different parts of the story.

I rate this book 4/5 stars. The only thing the novel lacked for me is the flare of super descriptive language and writing to enhance the scene. In the mind of a thirteen year old, I really wasn't expecting it to have enchanting writing. I did really enjoy this book and was pleased by the characters and the emotional rollercoaster that I went on while reading this.
