I love this book, immensely. The characters are so rich and real. The cast is huge, but yet each character is so much their own person that they all stand out to me distinctly -- even those with smaller parts and lesser pages, like Ogma, Brero, or Tharrin. When Maia does something, it feels exactly what Maia would do - not some easy plot win or strategy. It's honestly, I think, amazing what distinctive characters Richard Adams can create.
The story itself is wonderful too, full of intrigue, politics, sex, fun, fear, and love. I didn't think Maia could top Shardik, and I still won't say topped, but it's on the very same level of epic. I love them both.
I like Watership Down, I do. But I honestly feel... Sometimes, a little (angry? Indignant? Sad) that Adams other, arguably greater books seem relatively unknown, in comparison. I guess perhaps the fame of a book in a way comes down to luck -- and I don't think people often think to seek out other books by writers they've enjoyed. It's a shame, really.
