A Sky Beyond the Storm by Sabaa Tahir

5.0

Such a satisfying conclusion to one of my favourite series. I sobbed through almost the entire end, it was cathartic, it was joy, it was grief, it was the beautiful, satisfying and bittersweet end of incredible arcs. I love the way Sabaa Tahir writes, her use of language and storytelling, her fully realized characters, their emotions and not shying away or making things easy, the world, it's complexity and conversation on war, racism, of generational trauma and oppression, how does the cycle of violence come to an end. This series is a conversation on suffering, grief and how does one face these emotions. Does it consume? Is it suppressed? Is it faced? How do we react to insurmountable loss?

I don't know what else to say about a fourth book spoiler free, but that the progression of the characters is amazing. I could not imagine this is the journey we'd take in An Ember In The Ashes and yet the promises were kept. I cannot wait to reread and see all the clues and bread crumbles she left a long the way. That she let time pass, she gave weeks for travels, two years pass over the course of the series adding gravitas to the dynamics, relationships and arcs. It is believable because it wasn't a three week affair. That no one is one dimensional. That all people have layers, the heroes are killers, and the villains are hurt. That doesn't redeem or excuse their behaviour but it does help us better understand one another.
